How to turn on and use Whisper Mode on your Alexa device

Amazon Alexa doesn’t need a special introduction. If you recently bought an Echo device, then you know all the great things Alexa can do to make your life easier.

You can do many things with Alexa, such as making calls, setting alarms, playing music, and many other things.

You can do all these activities using whisper mode of Alexa.

If you don’t know how to use this feature, we are here to guide you.

In this article, we will show you how to activate Alexa’s whisper mode.

The Whisper Mode feature of Alexa allows Amazon smart speakers to identify if you are speaking with a normal tone of voice or, if you are speaking at a volume lower than usual.

Accordingly Alexa will then respond by whispering or at the volume that you have set.

Amazon Speakers Compatible with Whisper Mode

If you already had an Amazon Echo or were thinking of buying one, you may be wondering which models are compatible with this functionality.

And the truth is that all models of the Amazon smart speaker are compatible with whisper mode.

  • Amazon Echo Dot
  • Amazon Echo
  • Amazon Echo Plus
  • Amazon Echo Show
  • Amazon Echo Spot
  • Amazon Echo Studio
  • Amazon Echo Flex
  • Amazon Echo Clock
  • Amazon Fire TV Cube, with its functionality as a smart speaker.

How does Alexa Whisper Mode work?

Unlike normal voice, whispering don’t need vocal cord vibrations to produce the sound that can normally be recognized by a Voice Assistant.

Amazon has coordinated the relationships between speech pattern recognition, vocal sound frequencies, sound direction, and silence levels that differentiate between normal and whisper speech.

This allows Alexa to recognize and respond in a normal or whispered voice.

What Happens When Using Whisper Mode?

When Whisper Mode is on, if you speak commands or ask questions in a normal voice, Alexa will still answer in a normal voice.

However, when you talk to Alexa in a whisper, she will, in turn, respond in a Whisper.

When you use Whisper Mode to give Alexa some other commands for example say you want to ask Alexa to access and listen to a music service.

Then Alexa will also responds in Whisper Mode but the actual music service will play at its normal volume.

To lower the volume of the music if desired, you have to give Alexa a Command additional in a normal or whispered voice.

If there are other interference in the room or other sounds or noises in the room, then Alexa may not recognize your whispers.

In such case, you have to get nearer to your Alexa device when you are whispering your commands.

It has been reported that some Alexa devices respond to Whispered Commands compared to other devices.

If you have multiple Alexa devices, then its better to test Whisper mode on each device to see which ones work best.

How to activate Alexa Whisper Mode?

Whisper mode is not enabled on Alexa App or Echo devices by default.

It must be enabled. Even if the Whisper mode is off, supported Alexa App and Echo devices will recognize Whispered Commands.

However, they  will respond at the default volume level.

To receive Whispered Responses, Whispered Responses must be turned on.

Here are the ways you can change to Alexa Whisper Mode:

Method 1: On iOS or Android device

  • Open the Amazon Alexa application on your iOS or Android device
  • Press on the Menu button present in the upper left corner of the app.
  • Now select Settings
  • Tap on the Alexa account
  • Tap Alexa voice responses
  • Once you open it, you will see Whispered Responses. Move the switch next to that option to activate it.

Method 2: By voice commands

  • Simply tell Alexa Enable whisper mode
  • After commanding Alexa this, the feature will be activated.
  • Whenever you give a command to Alexa in a low voice, she will respond in the same tone. Something useful when you want to have a conversation with the assistant in more privacy, or not to disturb someone who is sleeping or reading, for example.

Whisper Mode: How to Use It Correctly?

In addition to speaking lower, Alexa behaves the same way when in Whisper Mode.

That said, there are some measures to consider. Most importantly, background noise is more likely to interfere with Alexa’s listening skills.

So while you might otherwise be able to speak across the room to your echo speaker, you’ll need to be a little closer so that Alexa can hear you.

The other thing to keep in mind is that Alexa will only whisper if you give her command in whisper mode.

If you speak in nnormal tone then Alexa will respond to you at a normal volume even with Whisper Mode activated.

How to turn off Alexa Whisper Mode?

To turn off the Alexa Whisper Mode and resume the normal mode, you can just give her a command in a normal or whispered voice saying: Alexa turn off Whisper Mode.

In the second option, you can go through the same steps as mentioned above through the Alexa app.

In the settings where you turned it on, slide the On/Off icon to Off when you get to Step Whispered Answers in settings.
